This week was all about shapes!
Monday The platypi started our unit with an intro to shapes through a tree shape sort activity. First, they did 2D shapes and then quickly wanted to move on to 3D shapes. They also did a roll and cover shape activity as well as shape puzzles in which they matched 3D shapes.
Tuesday Our second morning included an ice cream shape matching activity. In the afternoon we explored shapes through sponge painting. The platypi enjoyed making different shapes and patterns out of the various sponge shapes. Cleaning the sponges acted as as additional sensory activity.
Wednesday The platypi learned about vertices, edges, and faces of 3D shapes through their own coloring books. Then, we applied this knowledge by building the 3D shapes out of popsicle sticks and play dough. This allowed them to further explore these shapes in a different form.
Thursday The day consisted of various iSpy shape worksheets that each focus on a different 2D shape. They also used our homemade shape magnifying glasses to find shapes around our home. They concluded their lessons with pattern blocks. They made their own patterns out of the shapes, completed patterns given to them, identified fractions, explored adding and subtracting fractions, as well as made their own shapes!
Friday The platypi finished this unit with a fun and engaging shape road activity. These road maps are the perfect size for matchbox sized cars! We also made our own shape pals out of various cut shapes and hung them in our playroom.
