This week was all about BUGS AND INSECTS!
Monday the platypi started the week with insect slime. Next, they did a shadow matching activity. They ended the day with a number of insect worksheets. This included an insect sort in which we discussed which bugs fly, jump, and or crawl.
Tuesday our day began with a bug dice game. The platypi are really into games involving dice, so this was a huge hit! We continued by reading some of our favorite books about bugs. Next, we did a craft in which they made bugs in the grass craft. We ended the day with exploring our bugs with play dough.
Wednesday the platypi made various bugs using pattern blocks. In the afternoon we had fun singing a ladybug poem and exploring insect facts!
Thursday started strong with an insect watercolor painting activity. The platypi love exploring color mixing and paint is a great opportunity to talk about various colors and color combinations! We explored insects some more through letter identification worksheets, insect iSpy, shape tracing, and bug counting. They also had a ton of fun with a bugs in “dirt” sensory play using pretend dirt. The recipe can be found below!
Friday began with a bee coloring activity. The platypi began by coloring the bees yellow and then practiced prewriting skills by drawing lines as stripes for the bees. We continued our bug week with a bug painting in which they explored what “tracks” their bugs make. The week ended by making crawling caterpillars and making them move by blowing through straws.
NOTE: If your child mouths things, please be sure to bake the flour beforehand. The general recommendation is 350 degrees fahrenheit for 5-10 minutes. This helps to reduce the risks associated with ingesting raw flour, however, this does not guarantee it is taste safe or should be ingested in large quantities. Your child should always wash their hands after play.
